National Oilwell Varco's Baylor Elmagco eddy current brakes and controls systems have been the industry standard for dynamic braking since 1954. NOV currently manufactures, services, and reconditions 13 standard brake sizes suitable for drilling programs ranging from 8,000 ft to 45,000ft. All Baylor Elmagco brakes meet DNV, ABS, and Lloyds Registry safety and design standards, and are certified for use in hazardous environments.

National Oilwell Varco also offers a comprehensive line of Friction Plate Brakes, both stand-alone and as a component of our many Drawworks Control/Auto Drilling Systems. Friction Plate Brake systems provide smooth and reliable drawworks braking capability. Brakes are available in 2, 3 and 4 plate configurations, rated from 1050 to 3000 horsepower, to be used as auxiliary brakes. Applied air pressure causes the actuator to clamp the rotating friction plates between stationary water jackets to generate braking torque. Varying the applied air pressure regulates brake torque in a precise and repeatable manner. Efficient heat dissipation is achieved by circulating a water-based coolant through the water jackets.
